I'm seriously thinking about going EFI on my Triumph

I have a 1970 Triumph 2000 MK2. Nobody in the country is selling carbs for it, its $500 per unit to get someone to rebuild them properly from scratch and $6oo plus shipping to send the pair to the UK and get a refurbed set back.

I’ve been looking at the Megasquirt V1, setup for single/dual injector EFI. I would have probably one 600cc injector per 3 cylinders. This way the ECU just runs the injectors all the time without needing a crank position signal, perfect for converting old carbed setups. For $170 USD I can get the ECU as a DIY kit, then another $99 for their pre made relay board which has literally all the connections required, plus getting two weld in bungs for the injectors to sit in and have fittings run to. The rest I would probably get from junkyards like the MAF, IAT, throttle body, injectors, fuel pump etc. I think my biggest challenges will be building the fuel system with the return line and the tune as well as making the intake plenum, but the rest seems pretty straightforward. I can get rid of the choke, have proper cold start control, proper tuning control and actually a car that runs! Hopefully.

You’ll be reinventing the 2000 PI then?

Cool :) i didn’t know you had a triumph. Have any pics?

I've got two project spitfires myself, one of which is getting a 2500pi engine. I'd recommend both the club triumph forums and sideways technologies. Both are full of knowledgeable people and a fair few have done efi conversions so would be able to help :)

What type of carb do you need? Because for that money you might as well get a replacement Weber, and I don’t necessarily mean DCOEs.

My Peugeot runs on a double barrel solex, that’s gone completely shit by now - so now i’m searching for a manual choke Weber to replace it, but at the right price....

It has a pair of single barrel Strombergs on a manifold that gives very limited choice, its pretty much twin singles or nothing.

Yeah something like that haha. A proper PI actually does use multi point mechanical injection (one injector for each cylinder), but I thought about doing dual injectors since it means I don’t have to retrofit a crank position sensor to tell the ECU when to open the injectors. That and the Megasquirt 1 is really cheap and can only do 2 injectors.

You can fit twin SUs on the same manifold unmodified if they’re cheaper/can get rebuilt locally.

You can also get manifolds to fit triple webers. The engine on the saloon is canted over slightly compared to the tr6, but tr6 manifolds will work fine :)

Aside from the throttle shaft bushings, which any decent machine shop should be able to do (just drill them out and press in new ones), Strombergs are dead easy to rebuild yourself. I’ve definitely had more experience with SUs, but my Rover SD1 had twin CD175s that I did a pretty complete strip down and rebuild on.

That said, fuel injection would be pretty awesome. I’ve seen full multipoint injection done on a 2000, using Megasquirt and a 2.5PI manifold (ITBs, yo). Still, it’s a pretty big commitment, not just in the fabrication and getting the parts, but also in setting up the fuelling map. That’s equal parts art and science.

What’s wrong with your carbs currently?

Sounds like a neat project. Go for it!

I wouldn’t do it to try to save money. If that’s your main motivation, I agree with halkyardo. Learn how to rebuild them yourself. That’s probably less work than working out the EFI anyway.

I was wondering if you were still knocking around :) did you bring the 2000/2500 over in the end?

I’m not on here as much as I used to be, but I’ve been following your Spitfire and MGB exploits with great interest.

The 2000, and a hefty stash of spares, are due in port later this week! Then comes the fun part of trying to get it registered. I just found out that its registration and WOF paperwork has used a bunch of different identifying numbers over the years, some of which are pretty obviously wrong, so it’s going to be an interesting adventure to get that all sorted out to the DMV’s satisfaction. I’ve got plans for a DeMuro-like series of articles on the whole process.

The irony is, my wife and I will be in England for a holiday by the time the car actually arrives at our doorstep. Nevertheless, I’m making the most of the trip, and have tracked down a bunch of unobtanium Mk1 and Estate bits that I’m picking up from a guy in Folkestone.

Did I remember you saying once that you’re somewhere in the vicinity of Sevenoaks? We’ll be staying near Westerham for part of the trip, so if you’re around, I’d love to buy you a beer! Drop me a line at rhalkyard@gmail.com or on Facebook ( https://www.facebook.com/halkyardo ).

Yeah that’d be really cool :) I’ll drop you an email. I actually went to school one town over from Westerham (pronounced westrum for some odd reason, probably to confuse tourists).

Can’t wait for the articles on the 2000, and pictures of the old girl :)
